Federal Legislation Proposed

Public Statement
Mayor Byron W. Brown
April 22, 2009

Federal Legislation Proposed by Congressman Brian Higgins Calling for Local Investment of New York Power Authority Annual Profits

I strongly support Congressman Higgins effort to retain the surplus power profits that are generated by the Niagara Power Project and commend him for crafting federal legislation that require reinvesting these profits into important regional waterfront, parks and cultural development projects that will benefit our area’s residents.

It is simply wrong that a mere 14% of the annual profit generated through the Niagara Power project remains in Western New York.

I enthusiastically join Congressman Higgins in calling for the allocation locally of the $63 million derived from the allocated, but unused Replacement and Expansion Power that is directed annually into NYPA’s bottom line. This practice must end and I will support Congressman Higgins every step of the way in seeing that this money, derived from our regional natural resources is properly returned to our regional community.

These funds can be quickly injected into our economy, providing critical funding for development projects taking place at Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Buffalo’s waterfront and key infrastructure improvements throughout the region.
