Mayor Brown Sends Condolence Letter To Polish Sister City

Correspondence Sent to Mayor of Rzeszow, Poland; Memorial to Victims of Smolensk Crash Set Up in City Hall Lobby

Mayor Byron W. Brown today sent a letter of condolence to Mayor Tadeusz Ferenc, mayor of Buffalo’s sister city, Rzeszow, Poland. The two cities have been sister cities since 1976.

In his letter to Mayor Ferenc, Mayor Brown wrote, “This is a tragedy of unprecedented scale to an ally that has stood shoulder to shoulder with America for many years. Poland’s contribution and fight for its own freedom are well known. The Polish expression ‘For your freedom and ours’ very well embodies this love of liberty and democracy. The men and women who perished in Smolensk embodied the best of this love of freedom and democracy.”

At Mayor Brown’s direction, a memorial to the Smolensk crash victims has been set up in the lobby of City Hall by the Katyn Forest Massacre memorial plaque, which has been on display in the lobby of City Hall since April 27, 1980.

Included in the memorial is a condolence book, which the public is invited to sign. The book will sent by Mayor Brown to Mayor Ferenc next week.
