Cutler $200,000 In Funding Will Advance Commissary Project on James E. Casey Drive
Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced that the City of Buffalo will provide the Meals on Wheels Foundation of Western New York with $200,000 in funding for their Commissary Project on James E. Casey Drive, which is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2009. “The Meals on Wheels Foundation provides invaluable service throughout Western New York,” said Mayor Brown. “Thousands of our elderly and disabled residents participate in this program, so I’m pleased to support this important project, which will enhance these critical services provided to our residents.” The new commissary will provide the foundation with an efficient and centralized meal production facility for not only Meals on Wheels, but nutrition programs throughout Western New York including soup kitchens, food pantries and nonprofit programs. The 27,000 square-foot meal preparation and distribution center will also serve as a disaster-ready facility, working in partnership with the American Red Cross and the Food Bank of Western New York to extend services throughout the region. In addition, the facility will be available for educational seminars, trainings, special events and other community needs. “In the last 40 years, thousands of volunteers have delivered more than 21 million meals to our homebound neighbors,” said Benjamin A. Gair III, CEO at Meals on Wheels for WNY. “This project will allow us to continue to meet the nutritional needs of seniors, families and children throughout WNY.” Total cost of this project is $7.5 million, with $2 million in kitchen equipment that will provide the foundation with an increase in production capabilities and a reduction in costs through energy efficiency. |
