Mayor Brown Announces Appointment to City Court

BUFFALO – Mayor Byron Brown today appointed Buffalo attorney Betty Calvo-Torres to fill a vacant City Court judgeship, as a result of the appointment of Hon. Timothy Franczyk to Erie County Court Judge.

Ms. Calvo-Torres is a graduate of Binghamton University and the University at Buffalo Law School, where she earned her J.D.  Her areas of practice include: personal injury,
criminal defense, family law / matrimonial law, surrogate court matters and immigration.  She has been in practice for eight years and started her career as a Erie County Assistant District Attorney.
 
“Betty Calvo-Torres is an excellent lawyer, who knows the city court system well and will serve the citizens of our city with distinction,” stated Mayor Brown.  “Having experience in both private practice and in the public sector, I am confident Betty will utilize her knowledge and understanding of the law to faithfully carry out the duties and responsibilities of the court.”

Ms. Calvo-Torres is extremely active in the Buffalo community. She has served as president of the Minority Bar Association of Western New York, and is currently a Commissioner of the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority, President of the Hispanic Women’s League, Inc. and serves as Director of the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo.

Ms. Calvo-Torres is the first Hispanic female Judge in the history of the City of Buffalo, and the first Hispanic judge since former Mayor Anthony Masiello appointed Paul Volcy in 2001.

Betty Calvo-Torres is married to Charles Torres, a Senior Investigator with the New York State Police.  They have a son, Christian.
