Joins Congressman Higgins, Others for Series of Celebrations

BUFFALO – Mayor Byron Brown celebrated the annual St. Patrick's Day events in grand style, beginning with the traditional annual luncheon at the Buffalo Irish Center on St. Patrick's Day, Friday, March 17, 2006.

Joined by Congressman Brian Higgins and New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, Mayor Brown greeted hundreds of luncheon participants at the famed Abbott Road location.

"This gathering is an important commencement to many activities celebrating the City of Buffalo's proud Irish heritage and I am always pleased to join so many friends and colleagues at the Buffalo Irish Center," said Mayor Brown.

On Saturday, March 18th, Mayor Brown joined Congressman Higgins and other city elected officials for a wreath-laying ceremony at the Irish Famine Memorial at the Erie Basin Marina, which was followed by the Old First Ward parade.

"The Irish Famine was a devastating world event that forever changed Ireland and the United States," stated Mayor Brown. "We came here today to honor the memory of the millions of Irish affected by the Famine, as well as celebrate the remarkable contributions Irish immigrants made across the United States and particularly in Buffalo.  They are not forgotten."

On Sunday, March 19th Mayor Brown marched in the 65th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on Delaware Avenue.  Organized by the United Irish-American Association of Erie County, Inc., the parade is the city's largest celebration of its Irish heritage.

"This is special day for all citizens of Buffalo, as you can tell from the thousands of people who line the parade route along Delaware Avenue," noted Mayor Brown. "I'm pleased to join Grand Marshall Michael O'Sullivan and the hundreds of parade participants that make the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade so enjoyable.  Everyone is Irish today!"
