Task Force uncovers suspected drugs, unlicensed dogs

BUFFALO—Mayor Byron Brown’s Save Our Streets Task Force was out this week in the city’s Fruit Belt neighborhood in the 7th in the series of Clean Sweeps. The purpose of Clean Sweeps is to address neighborhood quality of life issues.

“This Clean Sweep was very successful,” said Mayor Brown. ”The Task Force uncovered suspected drugs in one abandoned house, an unlicensed pit bull in another, as well as a deceased dog in another abandoned house. By conducting this Clean Sweep, we were able to address several quality of life issues in the Fruit Belt.”

This week’s Clean Sweep took place on Orange Street, then moved over to Lemon, Peach and High Streets. All told, the Save Our Streets Task Force had a successful outing. Buffalo Police identified three drug houses and sent suspected drugs for testing. Animal Control issued summonses for three unlicensed dogs, and removed one pitbull from a house on Orange Street. They also found a dog that was deceased at another house on Orange Street.

The Mayor’s Impact Team and Clean and Seal Team also participated in this week’s Clean Sweep by trimming trees, cleaning vacant lots, and boarding up vacant houses.

The Clean and Seal team mowed thirty-one lots, removed 8.65 tons of debris and boarded one house. Public works removed 1.1 tons of tires.   The Buffalo Sewer Authority cleaned out nine receivers. Eight illegal cable hookups were removed by Adelphia, and National Fuel removed eight meters. Fire Prevention distributed four smoke detectors and twenty-one batteries.

The Clean Sweep Team is comprised of Buffalo Police, Buffalo Public Works, Mayor Brown’s Quality of Life Teams, Probation, Animal Control, Buffalo Sewer Authority, National Grid, National Fuel, Adelphia Cable, US Marshals, Fire Prevention, Inspections, and Rodent Control. Since the Clean Sweeps began in May, the team has uncovered 20 suspected drug houses, removed over 32 tons of debris, baited 301 homes for rodents, and given out 114 smoke detectors. This was the seventh of fifteen Clean Sweeps scheduled for this year.
