Youth to perform free repairs for elderly, handicapped and low-income residents

BUFFALO—Mayor Byron W. Brown this week will kick off the City of Buffalo “Neighbor to Neighbor” Group Workcamp Revitalization Program at McKinley High School on Elmwood Avenue. The weeklong program begins on July 24, 2006.

“By sponsoring the Group Workcamps Program, the City of Buffalo is offering a substantial service to elderly and low-income homeowners,” said Mayor Brown. “It is tremendous to see so many youth volunteers from all over the country who are taking action to help improve the quality of life in the City of Buffalo. We are proud to have this program in our community."

Over 400 youth from across the country will be in Buffalo, from the Group Workcamps Foundation programs. Also, local youth will work on vacant lot cleanups and minor home repairs throughout the city. As many as 70 local homeowners will receive free home repairs during the week of activities supported by partnerships with Buffalo's government agencies and police department, faith-based and education organizations.

The Group Workcamps Foundation program is a non-profit, interdenominational Christian volunteer home-repair organization headquartered in Loveland, Colorado. This summer, an anticipated 30,000 young people and adults will participate in 64 Workcamps in communities across the United States and Canada.

Through the Buffalo Weed and Seed program and the Mayor’s Youth Impact Team, youth are assisting at several sites throughout the city, and they will work on the removal of graffiti, distribution of recycling information and conversion of vacant lots into gardens in some of the neighborhoods where Group Workcamps volunteers are completing home repairs.

"The work represents about 12,000 hours of volunteer labor-worth at least $80,000 to the community,” said Oswaldo Mestre, Jr., Director of the Division of Citizen Services. Not only will the residents benefit from the physical redevelopment of this community, but the community will benefit from the social interaction of youth and families sharing in rebuilding and revitalizing Buffalo’s neighborhoods."
