Activities coincide with the "Great American Cleanup"

BUFFALO—Mayor Byron Brown today joined volunteers with the efforts to clean up the Grant/Ferry Street neighborhood.  The clean up effort, coinciding with ongoing activities currently underway to reinvigorate the Grant Street business district, is associated with the "Great American Cleanup."

"We know that graffiti and garbage removal, as well as maintained gardens and green spaces improve the quality of life for all residents," said Mayor Brown.  "We want to make the Grant Street commercial district attractive to potential businesses, shoppers and investors; today's effort is an excellent first step.  I am proud to be a part of the clean up effort."

Since 1991, the city has participated in cleanup events that benefit the City of Buffalo and Western New York. Each year more people volunteer to clean our streets, vacant lots, school playgrounds, business districts, parks and waterways. Volunteers build gardens, remove graffiti, cleanup litter, and promote recycling. These efforts foster the spirit of stewardship among young and old and build personal attachment to our neighborhoods.

Great American Cleanup efforts in Buffalo and Western New York have been recognized several times as among the best in the United States. The reason the Great American Cleanup is so successful in the region is because of our corporate sponsors who provide valuable support.

This year's corporate sponsors are: Honda, Firestone-Bridgestone, Pepsi, Sam's Club, Troy-Bilt, Wrigley, Glad, Scott's Miracle-Gro, Waste Management and WIVB-TV, Channel 4.

Volunteers, including students from Buffalo State College and Lafayette High School, block clubs, the Grant/Ferry Business Association and neighbors today removed graffiti, cleaned streets, removed garbage, and engaged in other general cleaning on Grant Street.
