12TH ANNUAL YOUTH & POLICE ACADEMY PLANNED

BUFFALO – Mayor Byron W. Brown and Buffalo Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson announce that the twelfth annual Youth and Police Academy for 7th and 8th grade students has been scheduled for Saturday, October 21, 2006. The Academy is coordinated by the Youth and Police Committee of the Citizen Advisory Group (CAG) to the Police Commissioner and the Citizen Preparedness Centers. The event provides a forum for youth to interact with law enforcement and peers in a positive way while learning how to avoid victimization.

 

The focus of this year’s academy will focus on Prevention and Preparedness. Students will hear speakers from law enforcement including the Buffalo Police, the NFTA Police and the FBI. They will hear from people whose lives have been directly affected by youth violence. The Buffalo Police Explorers will provide peer interaction along with other Youth role models from area schools.

 

Each participant will learn how to build an emergency kit and hear about preparedness techniques for weather and other emergencies. Students will be provided opportunities to ask questions and make suggestions. They will also learn about pertinent issues of safety in school and while using public transportation. An important presentation by the FBI on Cyber Crime will highlight the day.  

 

At the end of the program, each student will be issued a graduation certificate signed by the Police Commissioner. Lunch will be provided. There is no charge for the program.   Scouts attending the academy may be able to earn merit badges. Community Service credit will be issued to those students that complete the academy.

 

To date, over 1000 youth have completed these highly successful academies.

Enrollment applications are available through Buffalo Public, Charter and Private 7th and 8th Grade School Principals.

 

Registration is on a first come, first serve basis and the program can accommodate up to 100 students. 

 

The deadline for registration is October 16,2006. The Youth Police Academy is sponsored by the FBI Foundation, West Side Community Services and the American Red Cross.
